20世纪30年代后期，古老的中华民族正经历着最苦难的时刻，无数中华儿女抛头颅洒热血，只为迎来和平与自由的明天。独立团团长李云龙（黄志忠饰）正是这群血性汉子中的一员，他没有文化，粗鲁莽撞，但全天生具有战略军事的头脑，善打狠仗、硬仗、奇仗，不仅在共军一方，即使在国军和日军那里也引起颇多的重视与尊重。只不过他不按套路出牌的做法让政委赵刚（任泉饰）深感头疼，而在争吵和战斗过程中二人也培养出深厚的友谊。国共战争末期，李云龙在与宿敌楚云飞（果静林饰）的对决中身负重伤，在医院中则结实了他一生的挚爱田雨（甘婷婷饰）。天下初定，这个戎马半生的铁骨男儿仍未停下他征战的步伐，继续为新中国建立更大的功勋……本片根据作家都梁的同名原著改编。
